“Staying Strong”
Ephesians 6:10-20
These are the times to adopt a warfare mentality. When we experience and observe the atmosphere in our social setting and process the deep divides in our relationships with one another, we are driven to engage in an attempt to address the reality all around us. There does not seem to be a neutral position for us if we are to be true to ourselves and authentic. In such times, it is a blessing to know that resources exist for us to confront and to overcome.
In Paul’s letter to the church of Ephesus there is a call to arms issued to the disciples of Jesus Christ who are facing demonic opposition for doing good, preaching the gospel and for standing on the Word of God. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” The struggle described is at bottom a spiritual one. No human effort or resource can defeat the systemic evil seeking to destroy the church and to prevent the servants of God from fulfilling their roles as witnesses to the Risen Christ. Fight we must, but not with the world’s weapons of warfare, hated, violence, guns and lies. The Lord has provided armor that can defeat evil forces, and distortions to the truth as well as, the strategies to divide and conquer.
The armor of God includes truth, righteousness, peace, faith, prayer and the Holy Spirit. These resources can empower the believer in fighting the good fight and bring glory to God. May we find strength in the armor provided by God through the avenue of faith and stay strong in these times of crisis.
Dear Lord, give me the strength I need to stand, to pray and to fight for the cause of Jesus Christ and righteousness. Amen
