WEEKLY DEVOTION – AUGUST 10, 2020
Living By Faith
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Faith in God is an active force in our lives. It pushes us on to action for the Lord and moves us on when life would hold us back. Living by faith, therefore, is moving by faith. This notion is stressed in eloquent terms in the book of James 2:14-24.
The Christian life in its dynamic form is movement toward a goal. The text in Hebrews stresses this reality by using the image of a strenuous race. The racecourse is before us. All around us, are witnesses, a crowd of victors, heroes and heroines, who have already run well the race of faith cheering us on. We are the runners, stripped down to bare necessities for the race. We are determined and we must persevere in the race of faith. This race requires endurance, which is essential in the practice of faith. And the greatest inspiration for this life of faith is our Lord Jesus Christ.
Dear Lord, thank you for your example for us to follow. Please increase my faith for the running of my race and for the living of these days. Amen.
